About ATA Devices

ATA (analog telephone adapter) devices enable analog telephony service through an Internet connection. In business, ATA devices are most commonly used with fax machines but also can be used with analog voice phones.

ATA devices do not work reliability for the following applications:
  • credit card machines
  • alarm systems
  • postage machines
ATA devices do not work with digital phones, PBX phones or IP phones. Digital phones include those that are used with phone systems like ATT Merlin, Nortel or Panasonic.

ATA devices from Vonage, SunRocket, or other branded VoIP providers do not work with Aptela as they are locked down with proprietary firmware.

What experience tells us about ATAs:

We only sell and support the Linksys SPA2102 ATA for use with Aptela at this time. This is the only ATA device we have found to work for faxing. Given the level of configuration needed for ATA devices to operate effectively, we highly recommended you buy your ATA devices from Aptela to ensure compatibility and support.

Update:
Aptela has recently deployed an auto-configuration method for Linksys ATAs and this dramatically improves the reliablity, especially for faxing, and ease of configuration of ATAs.
