Polycom phone cannot obtain boot parameters

Issue:  My Polycom IP Phone is in a constant state of reboot. It keeps showing the message, "Failed to get boot parameters via DHCP. xxx seconds until reboot."

This will occur if ...
  • There is no DHCP server on the network
  • A bad network cable
  • The LAN port is broken

Step 1 is to determined the cause of the problem.

Before we start, let's do a network configuration reset on the phone. To do this, hold down the following keys simultaneously on the phone once the "Welcome, xx seconds until autoboot." screen appears: '4', '6', '8', '*' and then, enter your administrator password on the phone ('456' by default).

Troubleshooting steps to see if the LAN port works or not:
  1. Reboot the phone, when the welcome screen appears ("Welcome, xx seconds until autoboot"), press the 'Setup' button.
  2. Enter your administrator password on the phone ('456' by default).
  3. Hit the 'OK' softkey.
  4. Arrow to the option that says, "DHCP Client" and hit the 'edit' softkey.
  5. Arrow down to toggle the setting to "disabled" and hit the 'OK' softkey.
  6. Arrow to the option that says, "Phone IP Addr:" and hit the 'edit' softkey.
  7. With '*' being the periods, enter in a static IP address that is within range of the rest of your network and hit the 'OK' softkey when finished. (i.e. 192.168.1.101)
  8. Arrow to the option that says, "Subnet Mask:" and hit the 'edit' softkey.
  9. With '*' being the periods, enter your network's subnet mask and hit the 'OK' softkey when finished. (i.e. 255.255.255.0)
  10. Arrow to the option that says, "Phone IP Addr:" and hit the 'edit' softkey.
  11. With '*' being the periods, enter in your network's gateway's IP address and hit the 'OK' softkey when finished. (i.e. 192.168.1.2)
  12. Hit the 'Exit' softkey.
  13. Arrow to the option that says, "Save & Reboot" and hit the 'select' softkey.
Once the phone has rebooted, see if you can ping the phone via a simple command prompt. If you can ping the phone or if the phone grabs the firmware and configuration, the network port works just fine.

Setting the phone to use DHCP client (enabled by default), but not actually having a DHCP server will cause this issue to occur and you'll either need to provide the phone a DHCP server on the network or keep the phone assigned with a static IP address so that the phone can access your network.

If you still cannot ping the phone after a static IP address has been set, the LAN port may be defective. You can confirm this again by confirming the connection on your network switch (usually an LED on your network switch will show connectivity). At this time, you would need to get the phone replaced under manufacturer warranty if your LAN port is defective.
