Configuring the Cisco 7940 or 7960 SIP phone for Aptela

Aptela does not provide support or service for Cisco phones.

As an open service, customers have successful configuration on Cicso models 7940 and 7960. We do not have Cisco phones in house so while these instructions have been verified as working with the help from clients, we can provide very little support or direction if they do not work.

Step 1:  Confirm the Cisco phone has SIP firmware
The Cisco phone must have SIP firmware installed in order to work with VoIP calls. If you see a SIP logo in the upper right corner of the phone's screen, the phone has SIP firmware installed. If you do not see a logo, you don't have the required firmware. Contact Cisco directly to purchase the firmware and get instruction on installing it. Aptela does not provide or sell the firmware.

Step 2: Configure your phone

  1. Press the Settings button on the phone
  2. Use the scrolling arrows in the center to go down to Unlock Config and press Select
  3. The screen will then prompt you for a password. Enter the password and press Accept.
    • The password for these particular phones is cisco in all lowercase letters.
    • Keep in mind that any time you leave the Settings screen you will be prompted for the password
  4. Next scroll up to Network Configuration and press Select
  5. On this screen you will see all the parameters to configure the network.
    • First, scroll down to the field which asks if you want DHCP Enabled.
    • Select Yes and then hit Save
  6. If you selected No on the step 5, then you  need to complete the next 4 steps:
    • Scroll up to the IP Address field and hit the Edit button.
    • Enter in the IP Address assigned to the phone and hit the Accept button.
    • Repeat the previous step for the Subnet Mask, Default Router 1, and DNS Server 1 fields.
    • Once you are done press the Save button
  7. Next, scroll to SIP Configuration and press Select
  8. Now select Line 1 Settings
  9. Enter the following data:
  10. Name = username.groupname
  11. Authentication username.groupname
  12. Authentication Password = SIP Password.
  13. This can be found by logging into the Aptela application as 'operator' and clicking on 'Settings' then 'About'
  14. Display Name = The name that will be shown when dialing another IP phone
  15. Proxy Address = voip.aptela.com
  16. Proxy Port = 5060 -- The proxy port should always be 5060. The "VoIP Control Port" on the Ciscos is the equivalent of "Local SIP Port" on the Polycoms and are recommended to be unique
  17. Press Back
  18. Messages URI = sip:voicemail@aptela.com
  19. Preferred Codec = G729a
  20. Out of Band DTMF = avt
  21. Register Expires = 60
  22. Register with Proxy = Yes
  23. Outbound Proxy = voip.aptela.com
  24. Outbound Proxy Port = 5060
  25. NAT Enabled = Yes
  26. Once all the settings have been entered use the Back button until you get to the main screen

You should now be ready to place calls with the Cisco IP Phone!
