Linksys Router Configuration

Default Settings

Our test lab results show that the default settings are sufficient in order to allow two-way
communication.  The phones will initially send a request to register with Aptela.  The
registration process will open a pinhole in the NAT table and allow communication to the
phones in both directions.

If your router does not work by default you may need to make a minor configuration change to your router.

Port Triggering

Port Triggering is the easiest method to enable Linksys Routing devices to work with VoIP.
Using this configuration does not necessitate the need to assign static IP address to your phone.

1.  Log in to your router.
  • The default IP of the router is  192.168.1.1.
  • Type that number in your web browser.
  • For most Linksys devices default user name field is left blank or is:  admin.
  • The default password is:  admin.

2.  Once logged in, click on Applications & Gaming.  Then, just below, click on Port Triggering.  (see image)

3.  Fill out the following fields:

Application
Enter SIP Phones or something meaningful to identify this for the future.

Triggered Range
  • Start Port =  5060
  • End Port = 50xx

The end port needs to be 5060 + the number of phones you have registered.  You may want to add some extra ports in case of adding future employees.   So if you have 10 employees, you may want to use 5080 (5060 + 10 + 10 extra).

Forwarded Range
  • Start port = 5060
  • End Port = 50xx

The end port needs to be 5060 + the number of phones you have registered.  You may want to add some extra ports in case of adding future employees.   So if you have 10 employees, you may want to use 5080 (5060 + 10 phones + 10 extra).

4.  Then click Save Settings.

The router may need to reboot.  Depending on the phone settings and where they are in the registration cycle, it may take up to 10 minutes for your phones to register.  You will see that they registered when the icon next to the extension label on the phone screen turns solid.
