VoIP Basics- September Edition
In our second edition of VoIP Basics, we're going to discuss how to get started with a hosted VoIP service and some frequently asked questions about using VoIP equiptment:
What do I need to use a hosted VoIP service?
You need just two things:
- Broadband Connection - A broadband (high speed internet) connection is required. This can be through a cable modem, a high speed service such as DSL or a local area network. You manage your account settings through your web browser.
- IP Phone or Personal Computer - IP phones plug directly into your broadband connection and operate like a traditional phone. Aptela sells a range of business-grade handsets that are certified and pre-configured-so you can take advantage of our "plug and play" solution.
If you use your computer, you will need a Softphone, software for making telephone calls over the Internet, and a headset with a microphone.
How do I make a phone call using my IP phone (VoIP phone)?
Making a VoIP phone call on your IP phone is just like using a regular land line telephone. Just pick up the receiver and listen for the dial tone! You can then dial your number normally.
How do I receive a phone call on my IP phone?
Your IP phone will ring like any other telephone when you have an incoming call. If you're using Aptela's service and have set up your Find Me list, the phones selected on your Find Me list will ring in the proper order when a call comes in to your number.
Who can I call while using a VoIP service?
It depends on your service provider and your calling plan. With Aptela, you can make calls to any local telephone number, mobile phone, long distance number, or any international number. You may even use the service to speak with more than one person at a time, such as conference calling or three-way calling. The person receiving your calls doesn't need any special equipment to receive your call- just a regular desk phone or cell phone.
Can I use my computer while making a VoIP phone call?
Yes, you can.
Does my computer need to be running in order to use VoIP service?
Your computer does not have to be on unless your VoIP service requires you to make calls using your computer (Ex- If you're using a Softphone to make calls, your computer will need to be on). VoIP service only requires an active broadband Internet connection.
