VoIP Basics - October Edition
Happy October! In our third installment of VoIP Basics, we're going to continue the discussion on how to get started with a hosted phone system and some frequently asked questions about using VoIP equipment:
Will I be able to dial 911?
You should check with the different providers to ensure that they do provide this functionality. However, in May 2005, the U.S. Government ordered all interconnected VoIP Providers to provide 911 functionality to their subscribers.
Who regulates VoIP services?
In June 2005 the FCC imposed 911 obligations on providers of "interconnected" VoIP services - VoIP services that allow users generally to make calls to and receive calls from the regular telephone network. You should know, however, that 911 calls using VoIP are handled differently than 911 calls using your regular telephone service. In addition, the FCC requires interconnected VoIP providers to comply with the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (CALEA) and to contribute to the Universal Service Fund, which supports communications services in high-cost areas and for income-eligible telephone subscribers. Can VoIP handle faxing?
Yes. All VoIP companies handle faxing differently. Aptela, for example, offers virtual faxing services- Faxes are received in PDF format and can be automatically sent to your email. You can also log into the Aptela web interface and retrieve and send faxes. Aptela also supports physical fax machines with the use of an ATA (analog telephone adapter).
What is an ATA?
ATA stands for analog telephone adapter. It provides an interface that allows you to use a standard telephone to communicate over VoIP systems.
Can you keep your existing phone number?
Yes, thanks to Local Number Portability, you can keep your existing phone number or a range of numbers.
