Small Business Recruiting - How to find candidates that fit your needs

For most small businesses, recruiting is often a challenge - resources are limited, the right candidate is hard to find and the tools are expensive. Without a dedicated recruiter and the bargaining power of multiple positions for posting, finding the qualified, creative, flexible and innovative employees that a small business demands can be a challenge.

Where are the good candidates?
We know posting positions on the big job boards is costly, especially if you don't have the volume for a high-dollar subscription. But even when you do splurge on the big boards, often the results are an onslaught of over-qualified candidates and third party recruiters. For many of Aptela's job openings, we avoid the large boards and go straight to those who cater to startups and small business environments.

StartUpHire, free to both employers and candidates, specializes in the venture funded arena. They target candidates who want to work for fast-growing, innovative companies - like yours! As an HR team of one, spending time on recruiting is a high priority, but it has to be quick and targeted. My favorite aspect of StartUpHire is that the response pool is small, but EXCELLENT! Aptela's postings on StartUpHire have successfully attracted candidates who are ready to learn about our technology, are excited to join a growing small business and understand the need for agility. This means I don't have to rifle through hundreds of candidates who have blindly applied to our postings. Hooray!

Another great resource is Startuply, also free to users. As the names suggests, Startuply specializes in recruiting for startup companies, with a focus on the importance of the right fit. When you only have the resources to hire one person for the job, it better be the right fit! Startuply helps both job seekers and companies find the right fit with their profile section. Companies posting on their site are asked "What are you building?" and "What is your Environment?" This is your chance to tell it like it is and let job seekers know what they can expect. For Aptela, our environment is:

...the energetic and fast paced excitement you would expect of a rapidly growing company! We thrive in a team-oriented, open work environment that enables us to deliver the best in business VoIP services. We love technology and small businesses and it shows!

In the hunt for a job yourself...?

If you happen to be seeking employment currently, Aptela is actively recruiting for Sales Lead Specialists and Technical Support Specialists. Check out our Startuply profile and our StartUpHire postings today!

The best recruiting method (in my opinion) is word-of-mouth. Tell anyone and everyone about the company you are recruiting for. Not only will you get clients, but people will want to work for your company also. Once those people are hired and/or become clients, tell them to spread the word.

Check references before hiring. It’s ideal not to hire a candidate on the spot because while they might seem like the best candidate in the interview, they might not be the best for you. remote support is a secure help desk software application that auto configures a temporary connection to your customer’s PC or Mac it support
